Catalonia's premiere wine region of Penedés is one of the oldest viticultural areas in Spain. It was also one of the first places in Spain, thanks to Torres, to introduce the stainless steel and cold fermentation process that has since taken hold throughout the country. White wines predominate, and the majority of these are made principally from the three local grapes, xarel-lo, macabeo and parellada which can be fresh, lightly aromatic and pleasantly lemony-fruity. Modernization of the region's still wines began when the Torres family experimented with the French varietals of chardonnay, merlot & cabernet sauvignon and combined them with the more traditional varietals. The finest Penedés reds are made partially or entirely from the cabernet sauvignon grape, by Torres, Jean León and a growing group of smaller producers. Tempranillo also can produce some fairly rich flavours here. |
