The predominantly German speaking Alto-Adige comprises the northern half of a long, narrow valley, flat on its floor but bounded by magnificent Alpine peaks. The steep mountainsides are planted with vines. This region makes every conceivable kind of still wine with considerable success.
South of Alto-Adige, the Trentino vineyards are less influenced by the geological structure and climate of the mountain valleys and the Germanic influence wanes. Trentino wines are varietals and Trentino DOC covers the whole area. Trentino is also responsible for Italy's largest production of Chardonnay and is a leader in sparkling wines. |
