The sangiovese grape is by far the most important influence in Toscana, producing world famous red wines including Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the signature Tuscan wines, Chianti and Chianti Classico (all DOCG). International grape varieties such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot have been introduced more recently, the result being the internationally renowned 'Super Tuscans'.
Local production includes a few distinguishable whites, the most notable among them being, Vernaccia di San Gimignano. And then there is Vin Santo, or ‘Holy Wine’, a sweet wine made from trebbiano and malvasia grapes. |
