With over 40 different DOC and four DOCG areas, Piemonte is the region that produces the largest number of best known Italian wines. The production of strong reds is predominant in this landlocked, mountainous region where the nebbiolo grape, the base for the famed Barolo, Barbaresco and Gattinara among others, dominates.
Despite the dominate reds, white wines also have their place in the region. The moscato grape is responsible for Piemonte’s fresh, sweet, sparkling wines, the most well known being Moscato d’Asti and Asti Spumante. This wine is perfect with the rich pastries and fine chocolate products of the region. |
