The hilly coastal region of Marche has one world-famous wine, Verdicchio, a dry, crisp white wine made from the grape of the same name with a little trebbiano and malvasia. It complements perfectly the rich local seafood dishes. The region’s best reds are made from the montepulciano and sangiovese grapes (which enjoy the dry maritime climate), in particular Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno.
The mountainous region of Abruzzo offers DOC reds and rosés also based on montepulciano. It is a remarkably versatile grape providing a wide variety of wine from light, refreshing rosés and reds, to robust, full bodied reds with a decent capacity for aging. |
