Lombardia is often underrated due to neighbouring Piemonte which produces twice as much wine, but in fact Lombardia does make a lot of wine and about a third of it is DOC. The region is particularly known for its sparkling wines made in Franciacorta and Oltrepò Pavese, the former being awarded the DOCG in 1995 ang going on to then create a separate DOC, known as Terre di Franciacorta, for its non-sparkling wines. Lombardia also produces still red, white and rosé wines made from a variety of local and international grapes including nebbiolo and trebbiano among others.
The climate of Lombardia is varied due to the diverse terrain of the region, but is generally considered to be a ‘cool’ continental climate. The region is influenced by several geographic features that control the climate and terroir of the land, including the Alps in the north, the Po River, and major lakes such as Lake Iseo and Lake Garda. |
