In the 1960s Friuli set up what proved to be Italy’s least complicated DOC system. There are six different zones and the wines are simply labeled with their grape variety and the area. The range of wine styles is incredibly wide, but throughout, the wines are characterised by their freshness and ample fruit.
This is the region where new style white wines reign supreme. The two most prominent wine zones are Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli (COF). One of the most dominant grapes is tocai friuliano. Other local wines made from malvasia, ribolla gialla and verduzzo are as interesting as those made from proven varietals like chardonnay, sauvignon, pinot bianco, pinot grigio and riesling. |
