The wine producing region of Alsace is a long strip of land centred south-west of Strasbourg around the town of Colmar. The appellation for the whole region is simply Alsace. Its wines, which have a strong Germanic influence, are usually made from single grape varieties typically used in German wines. Alsace primarily produces white wines which range from light and fresh Pinot Blanc, the fuller bodied Pinot Gris, through the austere steeliness of Riesling to the musky Gewürztraminer. |
